Clean drinking water for the primary school at Kodek

There was great excitement today amongst the 800 children and the teachers at the primary school in Kodek, which is located approximately 7 Kms from Maroua, the capital of the Far North region of Cameroon.  A huge drilling rig arrived at the school and started to drill a borehole which will provide clean drinking water for everyone at the school.  Up until now, the children have drunk the water from a nearby health centre where there is an open well, but this has now been fenced off, leaving the school with no access to drinking water at all.  Cholera, malaria and typhoid are common in this part of Cameroon, where temperatures can regularly rise well into the 40s in the prolonged dry season.  It is anticipated that the provision of clean drinking water to the school will reduce the incidence of absence due to ill health and will improve the children’s academic performance.
