Solar Lamps in remote villages

by | Oct 5, 2018 | BSFA News

For the past three months, a pilot scheme has been running in the remote village of Buh in the NW Region, bringing solar powered light to households in the village, and a little extra money to the entrepreneurs who are trying this business project, introduced by Wessex Social Ventures.  If the pilot scheme is successful, it is hoped that the business model can be introduced into other villages and thus reduce the dependence on the dangerous kerosene lamps.  So far, the scheme is running very well despite recent heavy rain which affected the efficiency of the solar panels.  Many lamps are being rented out and recharged and phones also being recharged, all at very reasonable rates.  Children now have the ability to study at home in the evenings without suffering from the choking fumes of their old kerosene lamps.
