Progressing well – new classroom block at GPS Alarba Mbar

by | Oct 20, 2026 | BSFA News, Improving Lives News

This new block of 3 classrooms and an office block, together with a newly constructed VIP latrine and a school garden, is progressing quickly and is really going to transform the lives of the 199 children who have been struggling to get an education in the old school buildings.

GPS Alarba Mbar is located in the Adamawa Region of Cameroon.  This is a very poor rural area with most families living a hand to mouth existence as subsistence farmers.  The Parent Teacher Association already club together to pay for the salary of one of the three teachers at this school and they put up the buildings that are currently being used.  However these are not conducive to learning and, during the rainy season the classrooms get waterlogged and become dilapidated.  At night, animals roam through the grass shelters used as classrooms, leaving their droppings all over the floor.

Like parents everywhere, the parents at GPS Alarba Mbar want a better life for their children and they know that the only way to achieve these aspirations is through education.  We are delighted that a new supporter of BSFA has come forward and is funding this project.  Since the rains eased a little, the building is going up fast and we are expecting it to be finished by the end of November.  A timely Christmas present for a very deserving community.

The Expected Impact of this project:

  • Improved learning conditions for 199 pupils through additional, safer classroom space.
  • Reduced overcrowding, creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
  • Improved access to safe sanitation through the new gender-segregated VIP latrine.
  • Better access to essential learning furniture for pupils and teachers.
  • Enhanced school safety, dignity and inclusion for children and staff.
  • Enhanced sustainability through school garden and environmental education activities.
