This November we were fortunate to have a meeting with the newly appointed Prime Minister of Cameroon, His Excellency Joseph Ngute. His Special Adviser has known of SHUMAS’ work with BSFA for many years and he was keen that the Prime Minister should learn more about our programme of Building Schools. We were accompanied by the Hindle family who are all brilliant fundraisers for our charity, and the PM was very pleased to hear their children’s thoughts on education both in the UK and in Cameroon. He was also really delighted that he and Fraser (11 years old) were wearing the same design tie!!
We also met with Laurent Serge Etundi Ngoa, the Minister for Basic Education (Nursery and Primary school level), and Nalova Lyonga Pauline Egbe, the Minister for Secondary Education. Such meetings are so important for SHUMAS because they raise its profile within government and make it much easier for our projects to be realised. SHUMAS has now signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Secondary Education and is anticipating signing a similar MOU with the Ministry of Basic Education. It is hoped that these working agreements will enable us to enjoy exoneration from import taxes on items related to our school projects so that, at some point in the near future, we will be able to include solar panels and computers in our packages. All the ministers were totally charmed by Amelie and Fraser, who really did their parents – and BSFA – proud.
