We have recently been able to provide funding for the drilling of a new borehole in Kumbo, NW Region, where the water system in the town has been broken for some time. The borehole is located at the only secondary school which is still functioning since the start of the war, but it also provides water for the whole community in that area. This school now takes all pupils who were previously attending 10 other Government schools locally – a total of 604 children, the majority of whom are girls. In recent months, many of the pupils have suffered from malaria, typhoid or cholera because they have been drinking from contaminated water sources. They have also been losing many hours of schooling by trekking in search of drinking water. This will now be a thing of the past and a water committee has been set up to ensure the maintenance of the borehole and the solar pump.
The borehole was drilled to a depth of 50m, so as to reach pure drinking water, and it is pumped to holding tanks using solar energy from the panels attached to the school roof.
