It is salutary to note that the recent start of the African Cup of Nations football competition, hosted by Cameroon, has prompted the British media to suddenly show an interest in the five-year long war in that country. The war, between the French-speaking government military and the English-speaking Non-State Armed Groups, has caused thousands of deaths and well over 700,000 anglophone children to be prevented from attending school since 2016. According to the UN, it is the worst under-funded humanitarian catastrophe at this time – and yet it has barely rated a mention until now. Hooray for football!!
