Some months ago we reported that the construction of a new classroom block at GBHS Ntui had been started. Close to 900 pupils were already attending this secondary school, including 100 Internally Displaced children, and with only 12 classrooms in the entire school, that meant that there were 75 pupils per class. Overcrowding was obviously an issue but, at the time of the pandemic, the spread of COVID was an additional problem in these conditions. The three new classrooms, complete with furniture, an additional toilet block with hand washing facilities, together with COVID prevention items, that we were able to fund, was a really timely intervention. Children and staff alike were delighted with these essential facilities, which were completed in early in 2022.
The Deputy British High Commission, Nigel Holmes, was delighted to be able to attend his first SHUMAS/BSFA school handover ceremony on 19th February 2022. He had a great time and really appreciated the singing and dancing by the school children. During his speech on the day, he spoke with warmth about the achievements of the BSFA/SHUMAS partnership. “110 schools and counting through a very impressive partnership between Strategic Humanitarian Services (SHUMAS) and Building Schools for Africa (BSFA), a small UK based charity which places great trust in SHUMAS. I would love to celebrate the relationship between BSFA and SHUMAS. SHUMAS has done a great job and is a great model for how to do development in Cameroon and I would like to see this happen more and more.” He later tweeted “This project is funded by the amazing British charity Building Schools for Africa and delivered by the ever reliable SHUMAS”.
